Archaeological Illustrator on GR2021 team

Eric Stegmaier, an archeological illustrator was hand picked by project GR2021’s director, Dr. Ruud Stelten. "It is rare to have an illustrator of such high caliber on an archaeological research project," says Dr. Stelten. "The drawings can show details which are not immediately apparent in a photograph."

This illustration shows the three stages of excavating the remains of GR2021’s Feature # 40.
Stage 1: uncovered the outline of a coffin. This outline primarily consisted of stained soil caused by the erosion of wood. A grinding stone was found above the coffin, which may or may not be associated with the burial.
Stage 2: unearthed part of the skull as well as large fragments of coffin wood. The coffin lid appears to have collapsed inward as the wood eroded over the centuries.
Stage 3: removed most of the wood to expose the remains of the individual.
