Mr. Hyden Gittens was born on the island of St. Eustatius in 1961. After
completing elementary education, he moved to the islands of Aruba and
Curacao where he completed his high school training. Mr. Gittens then
continued his studies at the Hogere Economische School (HEAO) in Den Haag,
Holland, from where he graduated with a degree in Business Economics
(Bedrijfs economie).
Returning to Curacao in 1982, he began his career with the firm, then Touche
Ross, now Deloitte. In the period 1986 through 1989 Mr. Gittens continued
his studies in Florida, where he completed a US Bachelors', and Masters'
Degree in Accounting and obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
degree. During the years Mr. Gittens worked his way up from staff accountant
to the position he last held as resident partner of the St. Maarten practice
of Deloitte before taking up the position of Governor of his island of birth
in January 2004.
Over the years, Mr. Gittens has acquired a broad experience in many fields
of professional financial service, working with corporate and individual
clients in a wide range of industries and disciplines.
Mr. Gittens has always been very active in Community service where ever he
resided. He served or presently serves as Member of the Workgroup
Constitutional affairs St. Maarten. Member of the General Conference World
Audit Service, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Princess Juliana
Airport, member of the St. Maarten Tax committee, the St. Maarten Rotary
Club, the Board of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the American Institute
of CPA's and associate member of the NIVRA Kring Netherlands Antilles.
In the years since he became Governor, Mr. Gittens has headed up a
government that has addressed two important areas namely sustainable
socio-economic development and constitutional change.
Mr. Gittens speaks four languages and is married with three children.
