Vacancy Building Inspector

The building inspector has the important task of verifying that both old and new commercial spaces, homes and construction sites meet the required standards governed by building regulations to ensure that they are safe. This employee is required to use their architectural expertise and knowledge to ensure that the island's residents and business owners can live, work and build safely.

The building inspector is assigned to the licensing, supervision and enforcement unit, which fall under the directorate of economy, nature and infrastructure (ENI). ENI oversees economic development, improvement of infrastructure and the maintenance of public spaces in Statia.   

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Checking the safety and legality of construction projects.
  • Ensuring that buildings, houses, and construction sites comply with general construction standards and safety or zoning regulations. These can be ongoing construction sites and existing buildings. Your decisions must be based on existing regulations, and could include more complex inspections, where preventive or punitive measures apply. Whether or not to apply administrative enforcement is done in close consultation with the manager.
  • Inspecting buildings or structures to determine compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Investigating possible violations of local ordinances and building permits.
  • Conducting on-site inspections to determine whether construction has been carried out in accordance with the building permit.
  • Liaising with contractors, homeowners or construction workers on-site and advising on modifications related to building regulations; drawing attention to weaknesses and irregularities and writing reports where necessary. 
  • The duties include acting as a special law enforcement officer. If non-compliance with regulations are found, this officer is authorised to issue an official violation report. The successful applicant will be trained to do this. Successful completion of this training is mandatory for this position.


Specific Requirements:

  • At least MBO 4 working and thinking level in a field related to architecture.
  • At least three years of work experience in construction, structural engineering or building inspections
  • Knowledge of the procedures and legislation related to the construction of buildings, building permits and the inspection of buildings.
  • Knowledge of the guidelines governing installations and inspections.
  • A valid driver's licence, category B.

Terms of employment

The position is temporary for a trial period of one year, with the prospect of permanent appointment. 

The salary scaling is equivalent to scale 8 on the salary scale, with a minimum of $2568,74 and a maximum of $3593,74 gross monthly, based on a 36-hour work week. This is in accordance with the salary table of the Statia Government dated 1 January 2023. Salary scaling is based on qualification and experience. In addition, this employee will receive a holiday allowance of 8.33% an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual income.

The successful candidate must provide a certificate of good conduct (VOG) and undergo a medical for inclusion in the pension fund.
