Public notice: voting by proxy

The Census Office wishes to remind voters that they may vote by proxy in the upcoming Island Council and Electoral College elections on Wednesday 15 March 2023. Proxy votes may be cast in in writing or authorisation on the voting card (power of attorney)

In writing.

When do you use a written application?

  • If you are not on the island on the day of the vote;
  • If you do wish to cast your vote in person;
  • If you want to authorise someone you trust to vote for you;
  • If you cannot place the authorisation on the voting pass because you have not (yet) received it.

What do you have to do?

  • Visit the Customer Counter Unit, elections, no later than 3pm on Friday 10 March 2023,   along with the person you plan to authorise to vote on your behalf;
  • You both must bring proof of ID;
  • The Customer Counter Unit will check whether you both are qualified to vote;
  • The Customer Counter Unit will check that the person whom you wish to vote on your behalf  does not have more than two proxies;
  • Once approved,  written authorisation will be given;
  • PLEASE NOTE!
  • This written authorisation cannot be changed;
  • The written authorisation is given to the proxy. This can only be done once.
  • The written authorisation can only be made once. No duplicates.

Misusing authorisations (recruiting) is punishable

You may authorise someone by filling in the back of your voting card.

When do you use a private power of attorney?

  • If you cannot go to the polling station;
  • If you do wish to cast your vote in person;
  • If you want to authorise someone you trust to vote for you.

What do you have to do?

  • Indicate on the back of your voting card the name of the person whom you authorise to cast your vote for you;
  • Place your signature at 'volmachtgever';
  • The person you authorise must sign at 'gemachtigde';
  • Give your voting card and a copy of your ID to the proxy;
  • PLEASE NOTE!
    • Never give your voting card to another person without first completing the authorisation yourself.
    • Only give a proxy to someone whom you are sure will vote according to your wishes.

Misusing authorisations (canvassing) is punishable
