DUO is revisiting the Caribbean area
In April the Education Executive Service [Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs] (DUO) is going to visit Bonaire, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba to open temporary service centres on these islands in order to communicate with prospective and former students. DUO is also going to organise information meetings and offer tailor-made on-site support for anyone who is facing payment problems. The visit is a follow-up to the visit to Aruba and Curaçao in November last year. DUO is now organising a webinar for prospective students on these islands.
Information meetings
The information meetings are aimed at students who are going to study in the Netherlands and their parents. They are intended to inform them of everything they need to know about study financing and other things they have to arrange in the Netherlands. An information meeting for former students is also going to take place on St. Maarten in order to explain the options when it comes to applying for an earning capacity assessment and local repayments, and what action to take in the event of payment problems.
Temporary service centres
People can call in to the temporary service centres to get answers to any questions they might have about Dutch study financing and repaying their student debt. There is no need to make an appointment in advance. However, former students should bring an identity document with them and if they want to apply for a reduction to their monthly amount, they must also bring an income statement so that DUO can, if possible, provide immediate assistance to this target group.
Tailor-made support
DUO is keen to help prevent former students getting into financial difficulties. For that reason former students with payment arrears with DUO will be given a final opportunity to avoid a collection agency being called in. Some of them will receive an invitation from DUO to a discussion with a staff member in order to find a tailor-made solution.

DUO bezoekt opnieuw het Caribisch gebied
In april brengt de Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) een bezoek aan Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius en Saba. DUO opent op deze eilanden een tijdelijk servicekantoor om in gesprek te gaan met aankomende studenten en oud-studenten. Daarnaast organiseert DUO ook voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten en biedt ter plekke hulp op maat bij betalingsproblemen. Het bezoek is een vervolg op het bezoek aan Aruba en Curaçao in november vorig jaar. Voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten
De voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten richten zich op studenten die in Nederland gaan studeren en hun ouders. Tijdens de bijeenkomsten horen ze alles over studiefinanciering en andere zaken die zij moeten regelen in Nederland. Op Sint Maarten vindt ook een voorlichtingsbijeenkomst voor oud-studenten plaats. Hierin wordt onder andere uitleg gegeven over de mogelijkheden van het aanvragen van draagkrachtmeting, lokaal terugbetalen en wat te doen bij betalingsproblemen
Tijdelijk servicekantoor
Op de tijdelijke servicekantoren kunnen mensen langsgaan met al hun vragen over Nederlandse studiefinanciering en het terugbetalen van hun studieschuld. Voor een bezoek aan een servicekantoor is het niet nodig om een afspraak te maken. Oud-studenten moeten wel een legitimatiebewijs meenemen. En als zij verlaging van hun maandbedrag willen aanvragen, moeten zij ook een overzicht van hun inkomsten meenemen. Op die manier kan DUO deze doelgroep indien mogelijk meteen helpen.
Hulp op maat
DUO wil graag helpen voorkomen dat oud-studenten in financiële problemen komen. Daarom krijgen oud-studenten met een betalingsachterstand bij DUO een laatste kans om overdracht aan een incassobureau te voorkomen. Een deel van hen krijgt een uitnodiging van DUO om met een medewerker in gesprek te gaan om te komen tot een maatwerkoplossing.
Online voorlichting op Aruba en Curaçao
Voor aankomend studenten op Aruba en Curaçao organiseert DUO een webinar. Dit is een vervolg op de voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten die in november zijn gehouden. In geval van vragen kunnen (oud)studenten van Aruba en Curaçao via chat en videobellen contact met DUO opnemen.
