Tasks and Responsibilities

The Public Health department is looking for a Vector Control Officer who is responsible for carrying out operational activities in the field of vector control and environmental health in order to protect public health on Sint Eustatius.

In this role you will perform practical fieldwork aimed at preventing and controlling mosquito nuisance and vector-borne diseases, water hygiene, rodent control, and conducting ship sanitation inspections. You will work across the island at various locations and help ensure that risks to public health are identified and addressed.

What will you do?

As Vector Control Officer, you carry out operational activities in the field of vector control and environmental health. The focus of the work is on preventing mosquito nuisance, monitoring hygiene risks, and supporting inspections and monitoring activities across the island.

Your main duties include:

  • Conduct inspections at various locations on the island such as gardens, water reservoirs, schools, and public areas aimed at mosquito control. Identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Apply approved control measures such as larvicides, biological control methods (such as guppies), and other approved control measures.
  • Conduct water inspections and collect water samples to monitor hygiene and legionella risks.
  • Carry out rodent monitoring and control activities in designated areas.
  • Assist with and perform ship sanitation inspections in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Respond to reports related to confirmed infection cases or mosquito nuisance.
  • Provide information and guidance to residents and institutions regarding preventive measures.
  • Register inspections and results in the digital system and prepare reports.
  • Support the exchange of relevant information between Public Health, healthcare providers, and other relevant organizations when required.

The work takes place both outdoors and indoors and may involve fieldwork in warm climate conditions.

 

Employment Conditions

The selected candidate may receive:

  • Temporary employment for a trial period of one year, with the prospect of permanent employment.

  • Salary: Scale 4, gross monthly between $2,058.51 – $2,791.20 (36-hour workweek). This scale is currently under review.

  • Working hours: Full-time, 36 hours per week.

  • Allowances: Holiday allowance of 8.33% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual salary.

  • 182 holiday hours per year pro rata based of a 36-hour working week.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Completed secondary education or MBO working and thinking level, preferably in environmental studies, healthcare, or a comparable field;
  • Affinity with public health, procedures and working processes;
  • Willingness to attend professional training courses (locally and/or internationally);
  • Good communication skills in Dutch and English (written and spoken);
  • Possession of a valid Category B driver’s license;
  • Digital skills and the ability to register inspections and reports in a digital system;
  • Physically capable of performing fieldwork in warm climate conditions.

More information

An assessment, case, and/or reference check may be part of the procedure. The selected candidate must provide a certificate of good conduct (VOG) and undergo medical evaluation for inclusion in the pension fund.
