Chikungunya is an illness spread by mosquitoes. The most common signs are fever and strong joint pain. Headache, tiredness, muscle pain and a rash can also happen. Symptoms usually start two to seven days after a mosquito bite. Most people get better within a week. There is no specific cure; rest, fluids and pain relief may help. Older people and those with long-term illnesses should seek medical advice quickly if they feel unwell.
The Government asks everyone to help reduce mosquitoes. Empty and clean any containers that hold water. Cover water tanks and cisterns. Keep yards clear so water does not collect in tyres, buckets, gutters or tarps. Use mosquito repellent as directed, wear long sleeves and long trousers, and keep doors and windows screened. With recent rainfall, these steps are especially important.
If you develop fever with joint pain, contact your healthcare provider. Try to avoid mosquito bites during the first week of illness so the virus does not spread to others. Please stay alert for updates regarding the information campaign and follow all preventive guidelines. It is always better to prevent than to cure.
