Climate Strategy Must Reflect Statia’s Daily Island Risks

Statia Government has submitted its response to the Draft National Climate Adaptation Strategy 2026 to the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Vincent Karremans. The submission calls for the final strategy to give stronger attention to the realities of small island communities in the Caribbean Netherlands.

For Statia, climate adaptation is not a future concern. It affects the systems residents depend on every day, including food, water, energy, transport, medical supplies and other essential services.

The submission recognises the draft strategy as a valuable step in strengthening climate adaptation policy within the Kingdom. At the same time, it stresses that Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba face risks that differ from those in the European Netherlands because of their small scale, geographic position and dependence on vital systems.

Severe weather can quickly disrupt trade and transport links. This can lead to shortages, higher prices and added pressure on households, especially those already financially vulnerable. For this reason, the submission calls for stronger focus on food and water security, climate resilient infrastructure, sustainable agriculture and cooperation with other islands.

The submission also highlights the need for climate-resilient harbour, airport and energy systems. These are essential lifelines for food, building materials, fuel, medical supplies and other basic needs especially in times of crisis.

Nature-based solutions are also important. Protecting coral reefs, coastal areas and natural landscapes can help reduce erosion, protect communities and strengthen the island’s resilience against severe weather.

The submission further calls for a stronger link between climate adaptation and crisis management. Early warning systems, emergency supplies, evacuation capacity, resilient infrastructure and timely support after disasters are essential for small island communities in the Caribbean.

Statia Government looks forward to continued cooperation within the Kingdom and with Caribbean partners to help build a safe, resilient and future-ready Statia for current and future generations.
