Commissioner Merkman Attends Workshop on Upcoming Housing Legislation

On Wednesday 7 May 2025, Commissioner Reuben Merkman, who holds the portfolio for Public Housing and the Social Domain, attended a workshop hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The session focused on the proposed Woningwet BES (BES Housing Act), a new piece of legislation expected to come into force in 2027.

This law will allow BES Social Housing Corporations to become toegelaten instellingen (approved institutions), granting them access to more favourable loan conditions to support the development of new housing opportunities.

The workshop brought together a range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Statia Housing Foundation, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the governments of Bonaire and Saba, and Fundashon Kas Boneriano. Their presence highlighted the shared commitment across the islands to strengthen housing policy and address the region’s housing needs collaboratively.

On Thursday 8 May and Friday 9 May, representatives from the Directorate of Social Domain took part in CANEYE meetings, following an invitation from the Statia Housing Foundation. CANEYE serves as the umbrella organisation for social housing foundations across the Dutch Caribbean.

During the sessions, various key topics were explored, including how the islands can tap into EU funding opportunities, the application of artificial intelligence within the social housing sector, the Mi Kas Awor (My House Now) initiative, and major housing projects currently underway in Bonaire—particularly those related to land use regulations.

As the Statia Government continues to explore new possibilities for affordable housing and build on existing initiatives, this engagement plays an important role in ensuring that the Policy Advisor for Social Housing remains up to date with the latest regional developments.
