This initiative is made possible through funding from the European Union’s BESTLIFE 2030 programme.
Running for 18 months, the project aims to transform agricultural practices on the island by introducing syntropic agroforestry techniques, a regenerative approach that integrates trees, crops, and livestock to promote biodiversity, restore soil health, and strengthen food security. The project addresses the urgent need to relieve pressure on Statia’s natural environment while building a resilient and sustainable farming community.
The training will be led by agroforestry specialists from Cijntje’s Organic Farm in Curaçao and will provide local farmers with hands-on, practical knowledge. A 1,000 m² plot, allocated by the Government, will serve as a demonstration farm, showcasing best practices and acting as a hub for experiential learning.
In a bid to safeguard the island’s native ecosystem, only native and long-naturalised plant species will be used throughout the project. By supporting forward-thinking initiatives like this agroforestry training, the Statia Government is investing not only in environmental preservation but also in the well-being and economic resilience of the island’s agricultural sector.
The training is open to both local farmers and agriculture enthusiasts. For more information or to register your interest, please contact the St Eustatius Farmers’ Foundation or the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services at +599-318-2757.
