The natural environment of the three islands is unique and plays an important role in the lives of residents, the local economy and tourism. It also helps protect the islands against the effects of climate change.
As nature across the islands remains under pressure, the Dutch Government will continue investing in its protection and restoration. An additional €40 million will be made available, bringing the total investment to €47.5 million for the second phase of the Nature and Environment Policy Plan for the Caribbean Netherlands. This marks an important next step in cooperation with the islands.
The planned measures include restoring vegetation and coral, tackling erosion and overgrazing, and reducing invasive species and water pollution. Consideration will also be given to ways of further improving nature conservation and monitoring.
The aim is to create a natural environment that is more resilient to climate change, whilst also contributing to a healthy living environment and supporting the economies of Statia, Saba and Bonaire.
