First Harvest from SWBRFS "Revamp Made in Statia" Project Marks Fresh Step Towards Food Security

The Revamp Made in Statia agricultural site has achieved a significant milestone with its first cucumber harvest, marking tangible progress under the Sheltered Workplace & Building Resilience for Food Security (SWBRFS) initiative.

Last Friday, the project team successfully harvested 20 kilogrammes of organically grown cucumbers and lettuce, which were donated to elderly residents at the Auxiliary Home and the Day Care Centre for the Elderly at Chapel Piece.

On Tuesday, 11th November, a further 65 kilogrammes of fresh produce were harvested and distributed to local supermarkets and mini-markets across the island, bringing fresh, locally grown vegetables to the wider community.

All crops are cultivated using 100% organic, sustainable farming practises at the Sheltered Workplace Made in Statia greenhouse and open fields. This achievement represents a vital step in strengthening local food production, reducing import dependency, and enhancing food security for Statia.

"We are proud to see the first fruits of our work come to life. This harvest demonstrates what collaboration, dedication, and community spirit can achieve," said a representative of the Department of Social Domain.

By month's end, additional varieties of salad greens and vegetables are expected to become available. The Department of Social Domain, along with its stakeholders and partners, continues to invest in food safety and security, promoting sustainable agriculture as a cornerstone of the island's long-term development strategy.
