Livestock Farmers To Benefit From Government Fencing Assistance

The Government of Statia has signed subsidy agreements with livestock farmers to assist them with fencing materials and help address the problem of roaming animals on the island.

The agreements will allow approved farmers to receive corner posts, centre posts, barbed wire and other materials needed to construct proper enclosures for their livestock.

The assistance is being provided under the Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (SAPSA), which seeks to improve farming practices and support the development of agriculture on Statia.

Under the arrangement, farmers will be required to make their own contribution towards the construction of the enclosures. They must begin construction within four weeks of receiving the materials and complete the work within four months.

The agreements also place responsibility on farmers to ensure that their animals are properly tagged and registered, kept within their enclosures and that the fencing is maintained.

The provision of fencing materials is one of the measures being taken to address the longstanding issue of roaming livestock, which poses a risk to motorists, affects animal welfare and can result in damage to the environment.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) will monitor the implementation of the agreements and conduct inspections to ensure that farmers are meeting the conditions of the assistance.

The initiative forms part of the Government's efforts to encourage responsible livestock management while providing farmers with practical support to improve their operations.
