Phase 1 of "Revamp Made in Statia" Project Successfully Completed

The Directorate of Social Domain announces the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Revamp Made in Statia project, a key part of the Sheltered Workplace and Building Resilience for Food Security (SWPBRFS) initiative.

The first phase focused on preparing farmland, refurbishing greenhouses, and securing the site to protect crops. These efforts mark a strong start toward greater food self-sufficiency and sustainable agriculture on the island.

Participants from the Construction Job Programme supported the work, highlighting the project’s focus on local skills development and community involvement.

With the groundwork now complete, clients from the Social Workplace have begun planting crops in the greenhouses. The first sorrel harvest is expected by the end of the year, a milestone that symbolises growth and collaboration.

Maxine Spanner-Suares, Job Coach at the Directorate of Social Domain, said the completion of Phase 1 demonstrates how teamwork and commitment can make a real difference. She added that the team looks forward to continuing their efforts to strengthen food security on the island.

Work is now underway on Phases 2 and 3, led by Green Side Oasis B.V. in cooperation with the Labour Department. These stages will include landscaping, irrigation, and planting 1,000 fruit trees to ensure a steady local supply of fresh produce.

The project is being carried out with support from the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services (LVV), the Farmers Cooperative, and several Dutch ministries.
