The BTMR project covers the renovation of three roads on the island, including historic access routes used by the community for generations. These are a section of Dr. B.W. Biersheuvelweg, Weg naar Lynch and Josiah N. Berkel Road up to the Seventh Day Adventist School, Behind the Mountain Road itself, and the Road to English Quarter. The project goes beyond resurfacing these roads. It also includes the connecting access roads to the Governor de Graaff School and the Seventh Day Adventist School.
The project aims to improve road safety and mobility, provide better and more reliable access for emergency services, and support economic development in the area. It also aims to make the project area more climate-resilient.
The existing road runs through land where ownership is, in some cases, unclear or undocumented. To follow the correct legal procedures and avoid future disputes, the Statia Government is asking anyone who believes they have an ownership or usage right to land within the project area to come forward.
The Executive Council has developed a strategic approach which aims to formally designate the existing roads and related infrastructure as public roads and public infrastructure, while creating a clear basis for future development in the area.
As the next step, the Statia Government will publish a public notice. Anyone who believes they have an ownership or usage right to land within the project area is asked to come forward and provide supporting information. This may include a title deed, cadastral records, or a certificate of inheritance.
This information must be submitted to the Directorate of Economy, Nature and Infrastructure (ENI) at BTMRproject@statiagov.com within the period stated in the public notice.
