Statia Government Hosts First Canon Days: Walk the Tunnel of Time

Together, we walked the Tunnel of Time and took the first steps in shaping our own Historical Canon.

For the first time, Statia proudly hosted Canon Days, a Kingdom wide event where islands and cities across the Dutch Kingdom celebrate and share their local history.

On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May, the island hosted the Tunnel of Time, a special experience that guided visitors through key moments in Statian history. The event welcomed people of all ages to learn more about the past, share their own stories, and help shape the island’s future Historical Canon.

A historical canon is a collection of important people, events, and themes that tell the story of a community. It helps us understand who we are, where we come from, and how our island has grown and changed over time. It is not just about remembering facts, but about celebrating our identity, pride, and strength as a people.

Statia is now in the early stages of creating its own Historical Canon. The goal is to shine a light on the island’s rich and strong history, gather ideas and memories from the community, honour the people who came before us including those affected by slavery and build a stronger sense of pride in our shared culture.

During Canon Days, visitors were invited to walk through the Tunnel of Time, stop by a Community Feedback Station to share their own ideas and stories, visit the Statia Heritage Centre, and enjoyed snacks and music in a relaxed community setting.

By helping to build the Statian Historical Canon, we are writing our own story for today, and for generations to come.

The Statia Government thanks everyone who joined and supported this meaningful event.
