Statia Government starts sale of Golden Rock homes to tenants

On Friday, 9 January 2026, Statia Government officially started the sale of twenty-five social homes to tenants. This milestone marks an important step in the government’s ongoing commitment to community development and providing residents with the opportunity to become homeowners.

Discussions on the sale of these homes took place under multiple governments over the years. In 2015, the PLP government initiated the process; however, challenges arose due to the absence of a board authorised to make decisions. At the time, the Kingdom Representative recommended that the matter be referred to the courts, as it had become a legal issue. The case was subsequently reviewed by the judiciary to ensure compliance and fairness. The sale of the Golden Rock homes was realised through an agreement between Statia Government and the National Government in 2022.

“Today, we are honoured to celebrate the transition of several tenants into proud homeowners,” said Commissioner of Housing Reuben Merkman at the signing ceremony held at the Ernest van Putten Youth Centre. “Homeownership represents security, stability, and pride. This achievement is not only about the sale of homes, but about offering a more secure future for our community.”

The Commissioner of Social Housing expressed his honour in being part of this process. Previously, both commissioners served as members of the Island Council when this dossier was presented. Commissioner Reuben Merkman noted that housing is more than bricks and mortar—it is where children grow, families thrive, and neighbours build lasting connections. He emphasised that with this step, the government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring housing remains a right, not a privilege.

The Island Council played a key role in advancing the sale of these homes. Special thanks were extended to the Island Governor for ensuring that legislative interpretation did not delay execution. Appreciation was also expressed to the Executive Council, administrative support staff, advisors, public servants, legal advisors, and the Statia Housing Foundation.

Statia Government, together with the St. Eustatius Housing Foundation (SHF), reaffirms its commitment to supporting residents and ensuring that social housing initiatives continue to meet community needs. This sale reflects the government’s dedication to strengthening neighbourhoods and supporting long-term stability.
