Statia Island Council Discusses New Waste Management System

During today’s Island Council meeting on Thursday, 2 April 2026, the implementation of the Integrated Waste Management System (IAB BES — Integrated Waste Management) was discussed. The system will introduce clear rules and enforcement for waste collection and disposal on the island.

The IAB BES is a framework to manage waste in a responsible way, protect the environment, and support sustainable development. It sets out clear procedures for waste collection, disposal, and enforcement, helping to safeguard natural resources for the future.

Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam said:
“For years we have discussed the need for this system. Today we take a concrete step to protect our environment and ensure proper enforcement. These changes will not be easy, but we are committed to working closely with the community to implement them responsibly. We understand the challenges, including possible cost implications. That is why it is important to introduce these changes carefully, so that living costs for residents and businesses are not unnecessarily increased, while creating a cleaner and safer Statia for everyone. We are grateful for the support of the Island Council and all partners involved. Together, we are building a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.”

The Statia Government thanks the Department of Licensing, Supervision and Enforcement (VTH) for their continued work, as well as local businesses and community members for their support.
