On Monday, 25 May, youth from across the island participated in an educational tour of the Waste Solutions Plant operated by EJL Services BV, where they learned how waste is collected, recycled and managed on Statia while promoting environmental awareness.
The tour also introduced participants to career opportunities within the waste management and environmental services sector, including recycling operations, transportation, technical maintenance and environmental management.
Youth Worker Curdi Lewis explained that the initiative was designed to encourage young people to become more involved in their community while learning the importance of protecting the environment.
“This initiative gives our youth the opportunity to learn, volunteer and contribute positively to the community. It is important that young people understand the role they can play in keeping the island clean and sustainable,” Lewis said.
Thee Impact, a youth participation and advocacy group operating under the Youth Worker of the Statia Government, focuses on youth empowerment, leadership, community engagement and educational activities for young people on the island.
The initiative later expanded into a community clean-up campaign in Princess Gardens ahead of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, with support from MDT Statia, a youth volunteer and community service programme coordinated by Granville Hassell.
As part of the campaign, a garbage bin provided by EJL Services BV will be placed in Princess Gardens from 29 May to 5 June, giving residents the opportunity to dispose of unwanted waste, debris and bulk items before hurricane season.
On Sunday 31 May, youth volunteers will also assist residents, especially elderly and vulnerable persons, with transporting waste and debris to the designated collection point.
The clean-up campaign aims to encourage community clean-up efforts, improve neighbourhood beautification, promote volunteerism and strengthen collaboration between youth organisations and community stakeholders.
The Statia Government commends all organisations and participating youth for their commitment to environmental awareness, volunteerism and community development.
