What Can (and Can't) Go in Waste Water

Have you considered where the water from your sinks and toilets ends up and how it affects our island? As waste water flows from homes and businesses directly into Statia's environment, improper disposal of oils, chemicals, and other materials can harm soil, pollute well and coastal waters, and increase health risks for the community.

When waste water carries chemicals or waste, it can damage the soil where plants grow, harm sea life and coral reefs along the coast, and create conditions where pests and bacteria can spread. By being mindful of what enters the waste water system, we can all help protect the resources that support our health, food, and way of life.

Certain materials should never go into waste water. Cooking oils, grease, paints, solvents, medicines, and cleaning chemicals can block pipes, create unpleasant smells, and harm the environment. When oils cool, they harden and cause blockages that can lead to overflows. Chemicals and medicines in the water can affect fish, coral reefs, and other sea life, which are vital to our local ecosystem.

Improper disposal can also attract pests such as flies, rats, and mosquitoes, creating health risks for the community. Careful waste water management not only keeps our neighbourhoods healthier, but also safer, cleaner, and more pleasant for everyone.

Each household can make a difference. Collect used oil, grease, or chemicals in sealed containers and bring them to the waste plant for proper disposal. There is no cost for disposal. Avoid flushing wipes, paper towels, or hygiene products, even if they are labelled as "flushable." Wipe greasy pans before washing, use biodegradable soaps, and reduce the use of harsh cleaning products whenever possible.

Reducing the impact of waste water is a shared effort between the community and the government. Every small step taken at home helps maintain a healthy island and a cleaner ocean. Keep an eye on the Statia Government official pages to stay updated on the latest developments regarding waste water management.
