Agriculture and fisheries are very important for food security on Sint Eustatius. The Statia Government has set clear definitions and rules to guide these sectors. This makes sure resources are used fairly and supports the sustainable growth of farming and fishing on the island. 

Categories of Farmers

Crop Farmers

  • Hobbyist: Small gardens or modern systems with up to 20 plants. Farming is not their main income. 
  • Subsistence: Farms between half an acre and two acres or modern systems with 20-100 plants. Most crops are for family use, some are sold. 
  • Commercial: Farms larger than two acres or modern systems with more than 100 plants. Farming is the main source of income. 

Livestock Farmers

  • Hobbyist: Farming is not the main source of income. Up to 10 goats or sheep, 2 cattle, 2 pigs, and/or 10 chickens. Individuals usually have a full-time job aside from farming activities. 
  • Subsistence: Medium scale farming with 10–30 goats or sheep, 3–15 cattle, 3–15 pigs, and/or 11–50 chickens. Some products are sold. 
  • Commercial: Larger scale farming with more than 31 goats or sheep, 16 cattle, 16 pigs, and/or 51 chickens. Most products are sold for income. 

Categories of Fishermen

  • Hobbyist: Fishing only for recreation and personal use. Catch is not being sold. 
  • Subsistence: Fishing part-time or alongside another job. Some catch is sold, but it is less than half of their income. 
  • Commercial: Fishing full-time. Catch is sold and makes up at least 80% of their income. 
  • Commercial Sport Fishermen: Earn income by allowing others to fish from their boat. 

Registration

All farmers and fishermen (hobbyist, subsistence, commercial) are required to register with the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services (LVV) and with the Sint Eustatius Farmers Foundation (SEFF) or the Fishermen’s Foundation. Registration must be done by February each year to be eligible for benefits the following year. Commercial and subsistence farmers and fishermen must also register at the Chamber of Commerce. Fishermen must register their vessels with the harbor authority and receive their permit through the Fisheries Commission BES for boats larger than 12 meters. Farmers must provide proof of land access through a deed or lease. 

Benefits of Registration

Registered farmers and fishermen may receive support from the government. Possible benefits include: 

  • Reduced prices for materials and supplies 

  • Access to land for farming or livestock 

  • Veterinary services and livestock medication 

  • Farm machinery and irrigation support 

  • Fishing equipment and boat support 

  • Fencing material and livestock feed 

 Note:  Only registered individuals can receive these benefits.
