Tasks and Responsibilities

Are you hands-on, enjoy working outdoors, and committed to animal welfare and sustainable agriculture? The Public Entity Sint Eustatius is looking for a dedicated Extension Officer to support livestock development and wildlife management across the island.

In this versatile role, you will help improve agricultural practices, support farmers, contribute to animal health initiatives, and assist with the management of free-roaming animals in line with local regulations and welfare standards. You play an important role in strengthening the agricultural sector while helping to protect public safety, public spaces, and animal welfare on Sint Eustatius.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting livestock farmers with practical advice on breeding, feeding, housing, pasture management, fencing, and sustainable farming methods;
  • Visiting farms and agricultural sites to assess needs, identify challenges, and advise on improvements in productivity and animal care;
  • Assisting with the humane capture, transport, control, and management of free-roaming animals in accordance with local regulations and welfare standards;
  • Monitoring animal welfare conditions and reporting cases of neglect, disease risks, or unsafe situations;
  • Helping organise vaccination campaigns, health checks, parasite control programmes, and livestock registration activities;
  • Assisting with data collection and maintaining records related to livestock numbers, farm development, animal health, and operational activities;
  • Delivering guidance and awareness sessions to farmers, residents, and stakeholders on responsible animal ownership and good agricultural practices;
  • Operating agricultural vehicles, tools, fencing equipment, traps, and other field equipment safely and responsibly;
  • Carrying out fieldwork in varying weather conditions and rough terrain across the island;
  • Preparing daily reports, progress updates, and recommendations for the Unit Manager;
  • Working closely with veterinary services, enforcement partners, contractors, and other government departments;
  • Supporting wider agricultural projects, food security initiatives, and environmental management programmes where needed.

Employment Conditions

An assessment, case, and/or reference check may be part of the procedure. The selected candidate must provide a certificate of good conduct (VOG) and undergo medical evaluation for inclusion in the pension fund.

The following order of preference will be applied during the selection process:

  • Residents from or currently living on Sint Eustatius
  • Residents of the Caribbean part of the Netherlands
  • All other candidates

Required Skills and Competencies

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Mbo4+ level or equivalent (or demonstrable work and thinking level through experience)
  • Experience in farming, wildlife management, or veterinary-related work
  • Experience working in field-based or outdoor environments
  • Valid firearm license and demonstrated shooting proficiency
  • Physically fit and able to work under demanding conditions

  • Clear communication skills in both English and Dutch (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, erosion control and climate-smart practices

The selected candidate may receive:

  • Temporary employment for a trial period of one year.

  • Salary: Scale 8, gross monthly between $3,312.81 – $4,601.12 (36-hour workweek)
  • Working hours: Full-time, 36 hours per week.
  • Allowances: Holiday allowance of 8.33% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual salary.
  • 182 holiday hours per year pro rata based of a 36-hour working week.
