Governor’s Cabinet host information session on permits and events

On Tuesday evening, 5 August, the Cabinet of the Governor, Licensing, Supervision and Enforcement, and the Task Force hosted an information session for stakeholders on the application process for permits, exemptions, and the organisation of public events on the island.

The session aimed to raise awareness about the importance of permits and the procedures behind them, with a strong focus on public safety, health standards, environmental and noise impact, and traffic and crowd control.

All members of the Task Force, VTH, and the Governor’s Cabinet were present and delivered presentations outlining their respective roles and responsibilities in the permitting process. They emphasised their shared goal: to promote vibrant, safe, and well-organised events on Statia, where collaboration with organisers and other stakeholders is essential. It was explained that the Task Force is currently finalising a document that clearly sets out all relevant processes and procedures. Once completed, this booklet will help prevent misunderstandings regarding the requirements and expectations for event permitting.

The Cabinet, VTH, and the Task Force also announced that similar sessions will be organised in the future to encourage a more collaborative approach, strengthen communication, and improve transparency in the permitting process.

The session was well attended, and participants appreciated the openness, the opportunity to ask questions, and the proactive approach taken by the government entities involved. Although all questions were addressed during the session, these will also be formalised in a written list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and shared with stakeholders. A series of follow-up sessions is scheduled to take place throughout the remainder of the year.

In her opening remarks, Governor Francis assured the gathering:
“We are not here to put up barriers; we are here to help you succeed. Think of the permit process as a partnership between organisers and government – between creativity and responsibility. When we all do our part, great events happen smoothly and safely.”
