Statia Government Announces Completion of EU-Funded SASPA Well Drilling Project

The SASPA (Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture) well-drilling project has been successfully completed, improving water availability for the community. Four new wells were completed and one well was refurbished before the end of 2025, supporting agricultural water needs on the island.

During the project, some areas experienced temporary noise disturbances. The Statia Government thanks residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout this period.

The next step is the development of a comprehensive water management policy. This policy will focus on the efficient and responsible use of agricultural water resources, supporting sustainability and local farming while addressing climate challenges. Stakeholders will be consulted during the process to ensure the policy meets practical needs in a reliable and sustainable way.

Commissioner of Agriculture Rechelline Leerdam stated: “We are grateful for the community’s support during the works and welcome the positive impact these wells will have. The upcoming water management policy will help protect our water resources for future generations.”

The project forms part of the Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (SASPA), funded by the European Union under its Budget Support Programme. The programme aims to strengthen and support sustainable agriculture on Statia.
