Statia Government Engages with Caribbean Students in The Hague

The Statia Government was pleased to participate in the “Best for the BES” gathering hosted by Stichting WeConnect in The Hague. The event brought together the Island Governors of Statia and Saba, Alida Francis and Jonathan G.A. Johnson, along with Bonaire’s Cabinet Secretary, Rayan Rammo, and Caribbean students currently studying in the Netherlands.

The gathering provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the future of young professionals returning to the islands. Discussions focused on the prospects for starters on the local labour markets of Bonaire, Saba, and Statia.

The event also marked the successful conclusion of the ‘It’s in Our Nature!’ project a year-long initiative in which a group of Caribbean students explored how the islands can become more nature-inclusive. Their work focused on community involvement and collaboration with local stakeholders. One student noted the vast potential for improved cooperation among the many active partners on the islands.

The students developed practical advisory notes which will be shared with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, as well as with the public entities of Bonaire, Saba, and Statia. Among their proposals: a year-round calendar of activities such as a cooking workshop titled “Eat Invasive, Save Native,” strategies to address roaming goats, donkeys, cats, and rats, and encouragement to plant more Divi-Divi trees, harvest rainwater, build school gardens, and create exchange programmes between the islands.

Governor Francis expressed strong support for the initiative and addressed the students directly, emphasising that their talents and energy are much needed back home. She highlighted that there are currently over 40 vacancies in Statia and encouraged students not to hesitate in returning. “Be bold, just try, don’t hesitate,” she said.

Island Governor Johnson of Saba added a word of advice: young people are encouraged to first gain experience in the Netherlands or elsewhere before returning to contribute to their communities.

The Statia Government expresses its sincere appreciation to Stichting WeConnect for this valuable initiative and to the Island Governors of Saba and Bonaire and the Cabinet Secretary of Bonaire for making time to engage with the next generation during their demanding working visit to the Netherlands.

Special thanks also go to the dedicated team members Chantal Dortalina and Thyra Balborda for their commendable work in organising and supporting this initiative.
