This milestone initiative aims to address critical socio-economic challenges on the island by revitalising the sheltered workplace model while promoting sustainable local food production and inclusive employment pathways.
The core objectives of the SWBRFS project include: Creating inclusive job opportunities for individuals who are distanced from the labour market, including those with disabilities, limited work experience, or long-term unemployment. Promoting sustainable agriculture by implementing environmentally responsible farming techniques to strengthen local food security.
Fostering economic resilience through skills training, practical work experience, and cooperation with local and regional partners. Encouraging social reintegration by offering a supportive and structured environment for personal development and empowerment.
This transformative project will be financed in the first phase by SZW (Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment) and implemented in close collaboration with several partners, including the Curaçao-based Green Oasis Side B.V., local farmers, NGOs, and key departments within the Statia Government.
A phased approach will be used to ensure the project aligns with both community needs and long-term sustainability goals. “This project is about more than just jobs or agriculture — it’s about restoring dignity, empowering individuals, and building a stronger Statia,” said a spokesperson for the Statia Government.
“We are committed to creating opportunities that are inclusive and sustainable, so that everyone can participate in and contribute to the island’s growth.” “The ‘Revamp Made in Statia’ project represents a crucial step towards empowering vulnerable members of our community. By providing meaningful employment and support within a structured environment, we are helping individuals rebuild confidence and independence, which benefits the whole island.
This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to social inclusion and sustainable development,” said Director Carol Jack-Roosberg. The Labour Department emphasises that this project is not only about employment and agriculture but also about restoring dignity, purpose, and community engagement.
The project envisions a thriving and resilient local economy where all citizens, regardless of their background or abilities, have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully.
“By combining practical training, environmental awareness, and targeted support, this initiative gives people the tools they need to succeed,” said Gregory Melfor. “We’re proud to be part of a long-term vision for a more resilient and self-reliant Statia.”
Further details about training opportunities, participation criteria, and community events related to the project will be announced in the coming weeks.
