Statia Government Strengthens Integrity Awareness Across Public Service

Statia Government has launched an integrity awareness campaign and introduced an updated Code of Conduct booklet to promote ethical conduct, accountability and professionalism across government.

Led by the Integrity Office, the campaign is part of a wider effort to make integrity a practical part of daily government work. Through interactive sessions with departments, public servants are reflecting on ethical behaviour, workplace responsibility and their role in maintaining public trust.

As part of this effort, the Integrity Office held an official ceremony on 2 July for the distribution of the updated Code of Conduct booklet. The Code of Conduct was originally established in 2020, and the booklet was updated in 2025 to make it more accessible and relevant to today’s working environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Island Governor Alida Francis emphasised that the Code of Conduct should guide the way public servants carry out their duties.

“A Code of Conduct is more than a document. It is a guide that outlines how we are expected to conduct ourselves, both professionally and ethically. It reflects our organisation’s core values, our principles, and what we stand for as public servants entrusted with serving others.”

The ceremony also featured keynote remarks from Darlene Berkel, who served as Island Secretary from 1993 to 1999. She reflected on the importance of trust, fairness and integrity in public service, and on the responsibility of civil servants to serve the entire community.

The updated booklet supports daily decision-making and professional conduct. It is centred on the core values of being respectful, trustworthy, accountable, transparent and impartial.

The awareness campaign is supported by internal video clips on key integrity themes and visual reminders displaying the organisation’s core values at the Government Administration Building, F.D. Roosevelt Airport and the Census Office.

Statia Government recognises that integrity is essential to good governance and public confidence. The Integrity Office will continue working with departments in the coming months to promote ethical conduct, accountability and a public service guided by fairness, responsibility and trust.
