Statia Government Takes Bold Step Towards a Cleaner Future with New State-of-the-Art Eco-Friendly Incinerator

The Statia Government is proud to announce a major advancement in its environmental and public health efforts through the purchase of a cutting-edge, eco-friendly incinerator. This state-of-the-art system will revolutionise the island’s waste management by providing a sustainable and efficient solution for solid waste disposal.

Designed to minimise environmental impact, the new incinerator utilises advanced clean combustion technology that significantly reduces harmful emissions while maximising waste reduction. The incinerator has been specifically engineered to meet the unique needs of Statia, based on detailed analysis of local waste streams conducted by EJL Services, the island’s waste management experts and managers of Statia Waste Solutions. This tailored design ensures optimal performance and efficiency for Statia’s specific waste profile.

An important benefit of this initiative is that the island will transition away from relying on landfills for waste disposal. Moving forward, the incinerator will be used exclusively for disposing of non-recyclable waste, significantly reducing the environmental footprint associated with traditional landfill use. Statia’s successful recycling programme will continue uninterrupted, reinforcing the government’s commitment to waste reduction and resource recovery.

Commissioner of Waste Management, Mr Reuben Merkman, underscores the transformative significance of the new incinerator:

"This marks a defining moment for Statia. For years, our community has worked with dedication to strengthen waste management and reduce environmental harm. The introduction of this state-of-the-art incinerator is not merely a technological advancement; it’s a bold declaration of our commitment to protecting the island’s future. By shifting away from landfill dependency and embracing clean combustion technology, we are setting a new benchmark for sustainable waste practices in the Caribbean. I’m proud of the teamwork and vision that brought us to this milestone, and I extend my sincere thanks to Mr Jeffrey Lewis of EJL Services and Dr Kimani Kitson-Walters for their steadfast support and leadership in championing responsible waste solutions. Together, we are paving the way for a cleaner, healthier Statia, for today and for generations to come."

The acquisition of this advanced incinerator demonstrates the Statia Government’s commitment to a greener, healthier island. By adopting environmentally responsible technology, we are investing in the well-being of the community and the preservation of Statia’s unique environment.

The incinerator's design ensures compliance with the most stringent international environmental standards, offering a reliable solution for effective waste treatment with a reduced carbon footprint.

Manufacturing will commence immediately, with the Government anticipating full operational capacity by the first quarter of 2027. This initiative is a key element in Statia’s broader sustainability strategy, aimed at enhancing public health, promoting efficient waste management practices, and achieving zero-waste disposal in the landfill.

The Statia Government thanks its citizens for their ongoing support as it advances towards a more sustainable future through innovative solutions and responsible stewardship of the environment.
