The repatriation process was led by Raimie Richardson, Programme Manager Regional Statia 2026, who has coordinated the return of numerous human remains to the island over the past several years. The work involved extensive research, international cooperation and coordination with institutions holding ancestral remains originating from Statia.
The delegation was led by Island Governor Alida Francis, accompanied by Carol Jack, Director of the Social Domain, and Programme Manager Richardson.
Through these efforts, the project has repatriated all documented human remains from the island, except for samples from the GR21 archaeological site that are currently in the Netherlands.
The repatriation carries profound historical and cultural significance for the community. Some of these ancestors lived and died during a period when enslaved people were legally treated as property. Their return represents an important act of remembrance, dignity and recognition, allowing them to return to the island and community to which they belong.
As part of the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was also signed between William & Mary and the Statia Government. The agreement is intended to strengthen continued cooperation in research, education and historical understanding.
The milestone reflects years of sustained commitment by the island and its international partners to address the legacy of human remains held in overseas collections and to ensure their respectful return.

The Statia Government expresses its appreciation to the university staff and all partners who contributed to the process with care and dedication.
The remains will be reburied and given a monument before the end of 2026.
