Statia Participates in Sixth Annual Kingdom-Wide Week of Crisis Management and Communication

A delegation from the Statia Government took part in the sixth annual Week of Crisis Management and Crisis Communication, held from 24 to 28 November 2025 in Curaçao. This year's programme brought together more than 100 participants from across the Kingdom to strengthen crisis preparedness, improve communication strategies, and build cooperation between the islands.

The week opened with a welcome address from Nathalie Cannegieter, who highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers, operational services, and communication teams from the Netherlands and the Caribbean region. She emphasised this year's focus on resilience and the shared goal of creating a safer, more prepared Kingdom.

Collaborative Learning Through Practice

Participants were divided into two groups: one focusing on crisis communication and the other on crisis management. Teams discussed real-world scenarios, shared insights, and developed practical plans to strengthen coordination and information sharing. The group work helped clarify roles and improve cooperation across the islands.

The programme also featured panel discussions where experts from different islands and ministries shared their experiences and perspectives on enhancing crisis response and communication throughout the region.

Statia's delegation attended workshops, discussions, and scenario-based sessions aimed at improving emergency coordination. A key theme was enhancing inter-island communication and exploring how teams can support each other more effectively during crises.

Statia's Contributions and Insights

Job trainee Elisha Brown delivered a presentation on the importance of connectivity and future cooperation. "Strong connections make strong islands. I'm looking forward to working together even more in the years ahead," she said.

Crisis Coordinator Andre Bennett noted that the sessions were valuable for Statia's continued development. "Every island has its strengths. When we share knowledge and work as one, we become better prepared. This week showed again how important that cooperation is," he said.

Visit to New Emergency Operations Center

During the programme, the delegation visited Curaçao's new Emergency Operations Center (EOC) building. The tour was led by Lesley J. Fer, National Crisis Coordinator of Curaçao, who explained the facility's purpose and its role in future crisis coordination. The official opening of the EOC is expected in January 2026.

The final day included an island tour organised by the host country and a networking reception, giving participants the opportunity to strengthen connections and close the week on a positive note.

Looking Ahead

The seventh edition of the Week of Crisis Management and Crisis Communication will be held in St. Maarten in 2026. Continued cooperation, open communication, and resilience will remain central themes.

Statia looks forward to applying the lessons learned this week and continuing to build a stronger, more connected approach to crisis preparedness across the Kingdom.
