Together with the Nature and Environment Policy Program (NEPP), SAPSA forms an essential foundation for improving local food production and protecting the island’s natural environment. These programs give farmers, policymakers and community members a practical roadmap for restoring ecosystems, increasing local production, and reducing Statia’s reliance on imported food.
A key priority of the current phase is providing hands-on support to farmers and livestock owners so they can adopt more sustainable practices. This includes the provision of equipment and material, training in the preparation of livestock pens and fencing, more efficient feeding methods, increased access to feed and water, and improved animal health management. For example, a well-designed pen can keep goats safe and well-fed, reduce stress, and prevent them from wandering into gardens or natural areas. Better feeding practices not only improve an animal’s wellbeing but also increases the yield of meat or milk from each animal, helping farmers do more with the resources they already have.
Responsible animal care contributes directly to healthier herds, more reliable harvests and land that can recover and produce consistently. These improvements protect farmland, help fruit trees and vegetables grow more steadily, and support a more stable and affordable supply of locally produced food.
SAPSA is more than a technical document. It represents an investment in the island’s future health and resilience, benefiting farmers, consumers, and the wider community. It supports a Statia where agriculture contributes positively to the economy, where nature is protected and contributes to our wellbeing, and where Statians have better access to fresh, healthy, and locally produced food.
