Freedom Meals come to Statia

For the first time ever, Statia will host a Freedom Meal event this year to create a space for the community where ideas can be expressed and shared freely. The Department of Culture and Events is collaborating with Freedom Meals to introduce the event here on Friday 5 May 2023.

Statia will join the other Caribbean islands of the Dutch kingdom in this year's celebration that is expected to see more than 1900 people share a meal.

The event brings people together to celebrate unity, diversity, and equality while creating their own freedom. Participants share a meal and share stories about the Dutch Caribbean islands’ links to World War 2, WWII in Europe, war missions today and countries where freedom is at stake. Themes include togetherness, freedom, peace, tolerance, democracy, the rule of law and resistance.

Hosting a Freedom Meal is an act of empowerment. It is a way to take action and make a difference in our community. By bringing people together, you are creating a sense of belonging and shared experience, commemorating an important event in our history.

Anyone who wishes to participate in this event is asked to contact Daniella Richardson at the Department of Culture and Events at daniella.richardson@statiagov.com or +599-318-2883.
