The construction of the animal pens supports farmers in preparing to engage in sustainable animal husbandry practices. Providing safe and appropriate facilities for livestock helps to improve animal welfare, support farmers in managing their animals more effectively, and increase local meat production in a responsible and sustainable manner. These efforts not only contribute to healthier animals and more balanced farming practices, but also to long-term benefits for the island as a whole. Additionally, the animal pens form part of a wider set of measures aimed at reducing the negative impacts of roaming animals on nature, infrastructure, public health, and agricultural land.
This initiative is implemented under the Statia Government's Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (SAPSA) for food security, as well as the Roaming Livestock Control Project within the Nature and Environment Policy Plan (NEPP).
