First Animal Pen Completed to Further Support Sustainable Animal Husbandry

Important steps continue to be taken in the Statia Government's efforts to strengthen food security and protect the island's valuable natural ecosystem. This week, the first animal pen for livestock was finalised as part of broader efforts to support sustainable agriculture, specifically livestock farming on Statia. Additional pens are planned to be built for livestock farmers in the near future.

The construction of the animal pens supports farmers in preparing to engage in sustainable animal husbandry practices. Providing safe and appropriate facilities for livestock helps to improve animal welfare, support farmers in managing their animals more effectively, and increase local meat production in a responsible and sustainable manner. These efforts not only contribute to healthier animals and more balanced farming practices, but also to long-term benefits for the island as a whole. Additionally, the animal pens form part of a wider set of measures aimed at reducing the negative impacts of roaming animals on nature, infrastructure, public health, and agricultural land.

This initiative is implemented under the Statia Government's Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (SAPSA) for food security, as well as the Roaming Livestock Control Project within the Nature and Environment Policy Plan (NEPP).
