Are you passionate about sustainable fisheries and working directly with the local fishing community? The Statia Government is seeking an enthusiastic Extension Officer – Fisheries to strengthen the fishing sector and promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the local economy.

You will be based at the LVV Unit (Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries) and report to the Directorate of ENI (Economic, Nature, and Infrastructure Development). In this key role, you will work closely with the Data Monitoring Officer (DMO) and serve as the bridge between the fishing community and the Fisheries Business Support & Advice Unit.

Wildlife Management & Enforcement (during the roaming livestock control project)

  • Enforce the removal of free-roaming animals in line with animal welfare guidelines and legal regulations (APV 29-2018, Article 3.3.3).

  • Apply humane removal methods, including culling, tranquilising, or safe capturing.

  • Transport animals to designated facilities or arrange for humane disposal.

  • Maintain detailed records of animal removals, tools used, and ammunition consumption.

Fisheries Support

  • Provide extension services and technical guidance to local fishers to improve productivity and profitability.

  • Organise training sessions, workshops, and field demonstrations on sustainable fishing techniques.

  • Visit individual fishers to offer tailored advice based on their needs and practices.

  • Support the fishers’ cooperative to enhance collaboration and operational efficiency.

  • Offer guidance on fish marketing, product distribution, and fisheries legislation.

  • Assist in developing and distributing educational materials and outreach publications.

  • Collaborate with government agencies, research institutes, and regional stakeholders.

  • Help implement government programmes related to fish processing, market access, and storage facilities.

  • Make exploratory trips to identify new fishing opportunities and advise on methods.

  • Participate in experimental projects related to fish processing and share findings with the community.

  • Conduct surveys on boats with fishers in cooperation with the DMO.

  • Maintain accurate records and support the Fish Services Department with reporting.

  • Contribute to public awareness campaigns on responsible fishing practices.

Field Operations

  • Conduct fieldwork in outdoor settings, often under high temperatures.

  • Comply with standard safety protocols and equipment maintenance routines.

  • Uphold high ethical and sustainable standards in all field activities.

Reporting & Coordination

  • Submit timely reports on activities to the LVV Manager.

  • Coordinate with the Fisheries Support & Advice Unit to align fisheries support initiatives.

  • Work in collaboration with fishers, fisheries stakeholders, and enforcement agencies to meet goals.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The position is for an initial period of one year. We offer a salary in scale 10, ranging from $4,099.58 to $5,320.73 gross per month, based on a 36-hour working week. These figures are according to the Statia Government salary table dated 4 December 2024. Placement within the salary scale is based on qualifications and experience.

In addition, the employee will receive a holiday allowance of 8.33% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual salary. The selected candidate must provide a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) and undergo a medical evaluation. An assessment and reference check may form part of the recruitment process.

Functievereisten

  • HBO degree or higher (Bachelor’s or equivalent).

  • Proven knowledge and experience in the fisheries sector or fisheries management.
