The programme opened with introductory remarks, followed by formal addresses from officials that underscored the importance of the harbour works and the strong collaboration driving Statia’s infrastructure development.
During the event, the Statia Government signed contracts with Statia Roads & Construction and the Ballast Nedam International Projects (BNIP) Early Works Agreement. These agreements form critical components of the Harbour Project and reaffirm the Government’s commitment to strengthening operational capacity, coastal protection, and long-term economic resilience.
The ceremony continued with the inauguration of the new SAR vessel Nora. During this segment, speakers reflected on the vessel’s significance to the community, including a tribute from the husband of the late Leonora Sneek-Gibbs, affectionately known as “Nora,” in whose honour the vessel carries her name. The Government presented tokens of appreciation to acknowledge contributions to the initiative. The vessel then received a formal blessing before the Government commissioned it into service as part of Statia’s emergency response capability.
The availability of the Search and Rescue vessel is essential to meeting the international safety requirements of Statia’s airport and harbour, ensuring compliance with global standards for maritime and aviation emergency preparedness.
The occasion concluded with closing words of gratitude to all partners and attendees, followed by a reception at the Boardwalk. The sequence of activities underscored the Statia Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening essential infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and advancing the island’s development agenda.
