Hospitality and Tourism Training Programme Supports Preparations for Statia Day 2026

As preparations continue for Statia Day 2026 and the commemoration of 250 years of the First Salute, participants are taking part this week in the Kick-off Week of the Hospitality & Tourism Statia 2026 training programme. Running from June 1 to June 5, the programme aims to strengthen hospitality and tourism skills while supporting the development of the island's visitor economy.

The training programme was developed by Summa College, an institution for vocational education and workforce development, in cooperation with local partners. The programme builds on existing initiatives on Statia and in the region. For example, the internationally recognised AHLEI training modules, previously introduced by NIPA on the initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), are now included in the programme.

Other training modules focus on hospitality, the customer journey, cultural heritage, service mindset and resilience. Learning through experience is at the heart of the programme. Participants can take part in activities such as a Hotel Experience or Restaurant Experience, where they experience the visitor journey from the guest’s point of view. This helps them develop skills that can be applied directly in their work and support their professional growth.

The Statia 2026 training programme is part of Region Deal. It supports the shared ambition to invest in the people of Statia and in the island’s economic development. The programme includes stackable training modules, recognised certifications, train-the-trainer pathways and existing local initiatives. This creates a structure that can continue to support the development of the hospitality and tourism sector beyond 2026.

The Kick-off Week marks the start of a training programme and an investment in the community. It helps participants build on their talents, learn new skills and contribute with pride to the future of the island. In this way, Statia Day and the commemoration of 250 years of the First Salute become a starting point for the continued development of talent, hospitality and tourism on Statia.
