NIX18 Campaign Launched to Promote a Safe and Responsible Carnival Season

As Statia prepares to celebrate Carnival 2026 from 15 to 27 July, Statia Government is launching the NIX18 Campaign, a public awareness campaign promoting the message "No alcohol under 18". Through community awareness and public engagement, the campaign aims to prevent underage drinking and harmful alcohol use, encourage responsible behaviour, and protect young people under the age of 18 throughout the carnival season.

Carnival is a time of culture, music, celebration and togetherness. The name NIX18 combines "NIX", meaning "nothing", with the legal age of 18, reinforcing the campaign's message that young people under the age of 18 should not consume alcohol. Through the campaign, the Statia Government encourages the community to celebrate responsibly and to protect young people from the risks associated with early alcohol consumption.

The campaign calls on parents, guardians, event organisers, vendors, bars, restaurants, youth organisations, schools and the wider community to work together to create a safer carnival environment. This includes discouraging underage drinking, refraining from purchasing or supplying alcohol to minors, checking identification where there is any doubt about a person's age, and promoting responsible alcohol consumption among adults.

The NIX18 Campaign also forms part of the island's wider preparations for new alcohol legislation, expected to be ratified in 2027 across the BES and CAS islands. The forthcoming legislative framework will strengthen measures relating to public health, responsible alcohol sales, youth protection, age restrictions, awareness, prevention and enforcement.

"Carnival should be a celebration that everyone can enjoy safely," said Commissioner Merkman. "With NIX18, we are sending a clear message that protecting our youth is a shared responsibility. Preventing alcohol consumption by those under the age of 18 is not only about enforcing rules; it is about safeguarding the health, safety and future of our young people."

Throughout the carnival season, the campaign will focus on raising community awareness, encouraging responsible behaviour and strengthening cooperation between public authorities, businesses, families and event organisers. The Statia Government urges adults to lead by example, support alcohol-free choices for minors, and help ensure that carnival remains a safe, positive and family-friendly celebration.

The community is encouraged to support the campaign message:

NIX18 – No alcohol under 18. Celebrate responsibly. Protect our youth.
