Research Underway to Develop Economic Strategy for Statia

The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK), in close collaboration with the Statia Government, have commissioned an in-depth research project to design a comprehensive socio-economic development strategy for the island.

The initiative, financed by the Ministries, aims to strengthen Statia’s local earning capacity, enhance self-reliance, and support evidence-based policymaking that promotes sustainable, long-term economic growth. It forms part of a broader programme across the Caribbean Netherlands focused on building resilient island economies and improving local prosperity.

Tailored Strategy for Statia

Statia will follow a dedicated research trajectory resulting in an individual report that reflects the island’s unique context, sectoral strengths, and development ambitions.

The study will assess current socio-economic conditions, identify key challenges and opportunities, and propose clear strategic directions for mid- and long-term growth.

According to the Ministries, the goal is to deliver “data-driven analyses and practical recommendations” that will guide future policy decisions and targeted investments on the island.

This initiative follows through on commitments made in the Administrative Agreements with Saba and St. Eustatius (November 2023) and Bonaire (April 2024), as well as assurances to the Dutch House of Representatives to present tangible plans for boosting economic resilience across the Caribbean Netherlands.

The Economic Bureau Amsterdam (EBA) was awarded the contract following a competitive tender process and will lead the research for Statia.

Engaging the Community

Building upon previous studies, reports, and SWOT analyses, the research will not start from scratch but instead integrate existing knowledge with new data and local perspectives. Active community involvement is a central pillar of this process, ensuring that residents, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders help shape Statia’s economic vision.

This week, representatives from EBA are visiting the island to hold consultation sessions with the Executive Council, Island Council, and representatives from key sectors — including business, tourism and hospitality, culture and the arts, agriculture, education, nature conservation, and healthcare.

Pathway to a Resilient Future

The final report will provide a detailed overview of Statia’s economic structure, labour market, natural resources, and priority sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, and innovation. It will include actionable recommendations, financing strategies, and monitoring frameworks to ensure accountability and measurable progress.

By combining local insight with national expertise, this initiative seeks to lay the foundation for a more prosperous, self-reliant, and sustainable Statia, contributing to the long-term stability and resilience of the entire Caribbean Netherlands.
