Statia Charts a New Course for Marine Park Protection and Sustainable Use

The Statia Government, in collaboration with the St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA), is leading the update of the Marine Park Management Plan, the key document that guides the protection and sustainable use of Statia’s Marine Park.

The previous plan covered the period 2020–2025. With that term coming to an end, the Government and STENAPA are setting new goals and priorities to strengthen the sustainable management of the Marine Park. The process began in mid-2025 and is expected to be completed by early next year.

As part of the update, STENAPA, supported by the Statia Government, is consulting with stakeholders from across the community, including fishermen, the tourism sector, local industries, the harbour, and several government departments. In-person meetings are concluding this week, with additional virtual sessions to follow where needed.

The initiative is supported by MPA Connect, a regional network of marine protected area managers and experts from across the Caribbean. MPA Connect provides technical assistance and capacity support and facilitated the visit of Celia Mahung, former Executive Director of the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) in Belize. The process is also funded by the Blue Marine Foundation, whose contribution makes this update possible.

Ms. Mahung visited Statia to assist with the management plan update. An experienced leader in park management and planning, she facilitated stakeholder discussions and shared her expertise in management plan development and national park operations.

Through this update, the Statia Government and STENAPA aim to deliver a strong and forward looking management plan that will guide efforts towards a healthier and more resilient Marine Park ensuring it continues to benefit the island’s people, economy, and environment for generations to come.
