Statia Government Encourages Responsible Waste Practices

Every day, people across Statia take pride in caring for their island. Households and businesses keep their surroundings clean, sort their waste, avoid illegal dumping, and teach their children to respect nature. This shared effort strengthens community well-being and helps protect the island’s unique environment.

Activities that undermine proper waste management, such as illegal dumping, pose significant risks to both public health and the environment. Waste that is disposed of outside the proper collection systems can attract pests such as rats, flies, and mosquitoes, which can carry and spread diseases including Dengue and Zika. It can also contaminate soil, disrupt coastal ecosystems when it washes away with rainfall, and damage local plants and wildlife. These effects are not confined to the area where waste is dumped; they impact neighbouring communities and the island as a whole.

Beyond environmental and health risks, illegal dumping creates hazards for residents, workers, and visitors. Sharp objects, chemical residues, and spoiled organic waste can cause injuries or exposure to harmful materials. Cleanup efforts require additional time, resources, and costs, which could otherwise be used to improve services or community spaces.

Rules and Regulations

Local ordinances, including Article 6.2.1 (Verontreiniging van de weg en van terreinen) and 6.2.2 (Verbod schadelijke lozingen) of the Algemene Plaatselijke Verordening (APV), provide the legal framework to prevent illegal dumping. These regulations exist to protect public health and the environment. Penalties may be applied when rules are violated, but the most effective protection comes from consistent community participation. By using designated collection points, properly sorting waste, and reporting illegal dumping when it occurs, residents help safeguard Statia’s environment, public health, and quality of life for everyone on the island.

What the Community Already Does Well

Across the island, many residents and businesses already use the waste facility and collection services responsibly. By separating materials and disposing of larger waste correctly, the community helps reduce pollution, protect public health, and support a cleaner local environment. These small everyday actions add up to big results that benefit everyone.

How You Can Keep Contributing

Separate recyclable and non-recyclable waste before putting it in your bins. Other, larger waste can go to the waste facility, where separated waste can often be deposited for free or for a small fee. Bring your own reusable bag when you go for groceries, and a reusable cup or bottle when you get a drink on the road, so you don’t have to use single-use plastic bags or cups. Join community clean-up days and encourage friends and family to do the same. Keep sharing your pride in a clean, safe, and green Statia.

Our Shared Future

Statia is our home. By continuing to dispose of waste responsibly and keeping the island clean, we protect our families, our health, and our natural surroundings. Every household that separates waste, every business that follows proper collection practices, and every person who picks up litter helps build a healthier and more sustainable Statia.

The continuous investment in advanced waste processing and reducing illegal dumping forms part of the milestones defined in the Nature and Environment Policy Plan (NEPP).
