Statia Government Launches Project to Boost Water Security for Agriculture

The Statia Government has announced the start of an exciting new project to improve water availability for local farmers. Three new water retention ponds will be built to collect and store rainwater from the island's solar park.

The project will increase water storage capacity from approximately 3,000 m³ to 15,000 m³, a fivefold increase giving farmers a much more reliable water supply for irrigating their crops. This is a major step forward for Statia's food security. Additional wells have already been developed as part of the effort to support the agricultural sector. With these ponds, water availability is more secure.

Work has already begun. The first phase excavation of the ponds is currently underway, and the lining of the ponds will be installed in the coming weeks.

Beyond supporting farmers, the project will also help reduce soil erosion caused by rainwater runoff, benefiting the wider environment.

This initiative is part of the Statia Government's Sustainable Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture (SAPSA).
