Island Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam marked the opening as an important step towards a more child-friendly Statia. She noted that the playground previously served as a valued gathering place in the Golden Rock neighbourhood and welcomed its restoration as a renewed space for families and neighbours to connect. She added that the project signals the start of broader efforts to build new playgrounds and restore existing ones across Statia, strengthening families, neighbourhoods, and communities while advancing the island’s commitment to becoming a Child Friendly City.
The site includes swings, a rock-climbing wall, monkey bars, a seesaw, and slides. It is intended for children aged 3 to 8. Families can use the playground daily between 8.00 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.
Jantje Beton supported the initiative, and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) collaborated with Statia Government to deliver the playground. The government thanks both partners for their continued support.
Island Commissioner Leerdam also expressed sincere appreciation to Director Carol Jack (Social Domain), Monica Smith, and the Programme and Project Management Office (PPMO) for their valuable input and dedication. She encouraged residents of the Golden Rock neighbourhood to embrace the playground and help make it a space where families and children can come together once again.
The government will expand this work in other neighbourhoods. Plans are underway for additional playgrounds and social community areas across the island, and updates will follow as the next locations and timelines are confirmed.
