Statia to Participate in Congress Reflecting on Fifteen Years After 10/10/10

Statia will participate in the 36th InterExpo Caribbean Congress, themed “Fifteen Years After 10/10/10”, taking place from 9 to 11 December 2025 at Nieuwspoort in The Hague, the press and debate centre of the Dutch Parliament.

The congress marks fifteen years since the constitutional reform of 10 October 2010, when the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved, leading to a new constitutional framework within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On that historic day, Curaçao and St. Maarten became autonomous countries, while Bonaire, Statia and Saba assumed their current status as public entities of the Netherlands. This year’s gathering provides a platform for reflection, dialogue, and renewed understanding between the European and Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.

Statia will be represented by members of both the Island Council and Executive Council. Members of the Island Council Clyde van Putten and Derrick Simmons. Mr. van Putten will deliver a presentation entitled “Fifteen Years After the Dissolution: Did Statia Truly Have Its Chance?” exploring the island’s democratic journey, the challenges of governance, and the lessons learned since 2010. Mr. Simmons will contribute to a panel discussion on “Equitable Education Throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands”, addressing the shared responsibility to ensure fair and inclusive access to quality education.

The congress will be opened by State Secretary Eddie van Marum of Kingdom Relations and will feature keynote remarks by Prof. Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, along with other distinguished leaders and scholars. Over three days, participants will examine governance, equality, and development within the Kingdom, seeking common ground to strengthen trust and cooperation.

Through its participation, Public Entity St. Eustatius reaffirms its commitment to open dialogue and partnership within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Statia delegation’s involvement stands as a statement of purpose to engage constructively, to represent the island’s voice with dignity, and to contribute to shaping a shared and sustainable future for all parts of the Kingdom.
