Temporary Hunting Operations Near Zeelandia Beach and Frequently Asked Questions

The Statia Government is committed to keeping the community informed about activities that may affect public spaces. The following frequently asked questions (FAQ) provide important information regarding temporary roaming animal control operations near Zeelandia Beach and the measures being taken to ensure public safety.

Zeelandia Beach in Sint Eustatius

We recognize that Zeelandia Beach is one of Sint Eustatius' most popular recreational areas, and we want to reassure the community that public safety remains our highest priority throughout these operations.

Whenever hunting activities are taking place, red safety flags and signage will be displayed at the entrance to the unpaved road leading to Zeelandia Beach as well as at the entrance to Boven National Park. Members of the public are kindly requested to observe all warning signs and avoid entering the marked operational area while activities are underway.

These operations form part of the island's broader efforts to reduce the impacts of feral roaming animals on biodiversity, agriculture, public safety, and the restoration of Statia's natural environment.

We thank the community for its understanding and cooperation as we continue working together to protect both our natural environment and the safety of our residents and visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I still visit Zeelandia Beach?

Yes. Zeelandia Beach remains open to the public. Visitors are simply asked to pay attention to the red safety flags and avoid entering the designated operational area whenever hunting activities are taking place.

Why are hunting activities taking place?

These operations are part of the Roaming Animal Control project under the Nature and Environment Policy Plan (NEPP). The programme helps reduce the impacts of feral roaming goats on Statia's biodiversity, agriculture, and sensitive natural habitats while supporting long-term environmental restoration.

Is hunting taking place on the beach?

No. Hunting activities are conducted only within Boven National Park. The area near Zeelandia Beach is used solely as an access point to safely reach the cliff areas inside the park. Hunting is directed only toward the park and never toward the beach or other public recreation areas.

How will I know when hunting activities are taking place?

Red safety flags will be displayed at the entrance to Zeelandia Beach and at the entrance to Boven National Park whenever hunting operations are underway. If no flags are displayed, no hunting operations are taking place.

Why was the access area adjusted?

The adjustment allows the hunting team to safely access steep cliff areas within Boven National Park where feral goats are located. It does not change the location of the hunting activities, which remain within Boven National Park.
