Social Pedagogical Worker (SPW) Level 4 Training on Statia

BES(t) 4 Kids is part of a project supported by the Statia Government, represented by the Directorate of Social Domain, and the Ministries of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) and Education. Together with other stakeholders, the project aims to improve the quality of childcare centres on the island. High-quality childcare requires well-qualified staff, so children can develop to their full potential.

Current legislation requires all pedagogical staff to hold at least a level 3 qualification. In the past, a level 3 programme was offered in collaboration with an off-island institution. The current partnership with Eligia Martier makes it possible to offer a level 4 training, which focuses on strengthening management within childcare and providing additional support for children with developmental challenges on Statia.

To participate in the level 4 programme, students must already hold a level 3 qualification. The programme also requires an accredited off-island institution, qualified teachers, sufficient budget, support from the local government, and a Memorandum of Understanding.

Eligia Martier MBO CuraƧao delivers the programme, which includes methodology, organisational skills, special needs, English, and study career guidance. Sixty per cent of the training consists of on the job practice. Local experts are invited as guest teachers to support and enrich the programme.

A total of 15 students are participating in the one-year training. The programme focuses on developing knowledge, initiative, practical skills, and leadership. This training supports the ongoing effort to ensure that every child on Statia gets the best possible start in life.
